Our scientific approach to lighting starts with health benefits. We first consider how the light will impact circadian rhythms, the stimulus to mind and mood, neuroaesthetics and visual comfort, and the potential for eyestrain and headaches cause by bad lighting design. We then factor in 7 key color quality metrics, and include premium features like multiple LED’s, premium phosphors and synchronized tuning. Additionally, all Brilli lighting is Energy Star Certified for energy efficiency—because the light should be beautiful and also good for the planet.
Certain wavelengths of light suppress Melatonin in humans, with the strongest response occurring in the short-wavelength portion of the blue spectrum between 446 and 477 nm. This light is good by day, as it promotes energy, focus and alertness. However, there is consensus in the healthcare community that exposure to cool blue light should be minimized beginning 2 hours before bedtime, at a percentage of less than 2%, as anything higher inhibits Melatonin production.
All Brilli lighting is designed with the optimal Circadian Stimulus (C/S) depending on time of day. And all Brilli lighting is designed with the optimal Melanopic/Photopic (M/P) ratio depending on time of day.
It would take a thousand super computers to replicate the amazing light spectrum of sunlight. However, Brilli does mimic some of the healthy parts of the sun’s spectrum—the ones that help to align our biological rhythms, improve sleep, boost energy, etc. And we think you should still get sunlight. Sunlight is healthy and we need it for things like Vitamin D. And the simple act of going outside just makes you a happier person.
Blue light at night can be very disruptive to sleep because they suppress melatonin production. That's why we removed these wavelengths from our Wind Down bulbs and Get in Sync fixtures (when dimmed to the low setting.) Even the sun emits blue light wavelengths during the day, which is beneficial to energy, alertness and feeling awake. So, we don’t recommend blocking blue light. Instead, we recommend exposure to blue light for specific times of day.
